Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, July 30, 1990 
Thelma Irene Upton Smith, of the 1100 block of Culpepper St., a retired
schoolteacher, died July 26, 1990, in a hospital.

Mrs. Smith, a native of South Norfolk, had retired from the Chesapeake school
system after 37 years. She was the widow of the Rev. Shelton H. Smith Sr. She
was a member of New Hope United Church of Christ in Berkley, where she served on
the deaconess board.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Shelton H. Smith Jr. of Chesapeake; a sister,
Alma V. Upton of Norfolk; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in New Hope United Church of
Christ by the Rev. Carlton Upton Sr. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
