About 11 o'clock one of the watchmen on the tug Speedwell, in the navy yard, discovered a man on the floor of the boiler room of the tug and immediately called for assistance. Investigation showed that the unfortunate man was Peter Smith, ship keeper of the steamer Monongahela, and that he had left the steamer for some purpose to go aboard of the tug, and in the darkness had stumbled and fallen through the hatch of the boiler room to the floor below. Medical assistance was summoned, but nothing could be done, and Smith died in a short while. He had been employed at the yard about a year. He was 51 years of age and leaves a wife and five children. He was a member of the Worden Post,, Grand Army of the Republic. The funeral will take place Sunday.
