Washington High School and Hampton Institute football star, who died at his home here at 865 Avenue A on Tuesday Nov. 3, were held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul CME Church. In the absence of the pastor, the Rev. W. A. McEwan, the Rev. F. P. Wise, pastor of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, officiated. A son of Walter Smith, Sr., well known Norfolk citizen, Mr. Smith who was 28 years of age, was an employee of the Norfolk Navy Yard, and ws one of the mainstays on the Booker T. Washington High School football team about five years ago. He also played football at Hampton Institute where he was a student for three years. Besides his father the deceased is survived by three brothers: Walter Smith Jr., of Wilberforce OH; Lieut. Herbert Smith of the U. S. Army, and Lawrence D. Smith, of Richmond, VA; four sisters: Mrs. Alice L. Grant of Washington DC ; Mrs. Mary Alston, of New York City; Miss Esther Smith of Wilberforce, OH, and Miss Ruth Smith, of New York City. Pallbearers were: Messrs. Thomas Cheatham, Lynwood Barber, Perry Braswell, Samuel Alexander, Charles Harrell, Thomas Smith, John Ruffin, Maurice Langley, John Shaw, Lamar Alston and Malin Shaw.
