Mrs. Smith was born in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Willie and Sallie Crockett Seay Aug. 28, 1920. Mrs. Smith was very active in her church and community until her health declined. Her love for her family and friends knew no bounds. She will be remembered fondly for her kindness, generosity and her willingness to always listen. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Deacon Emeritus Seldon L. Smith ; brothers, Sidney O. Seay, Julian R. "Dick" Seay and sister, Evelyn S. Hewitt. Mrs. Smith retired from St. Pius Rectory and was a longterm substitute teacher for many years in Norfolk. A graduate of St. Paul's Teacher's College, in Lawrenceville, Va., she also attended Hampton Institute (University) in Hampton, Va. She was a 27-year member of Abyssinia Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she served as a deaconess, pastor's aide and missionary. Those celebrating her memory are her son, retired Lt. Col. Samuel C. Smith (Cleta) of Rome, N.Y.; daughter, Rosa R. Morring (Walter) of Norfolk; grandchildren, Sonya L. Smith (Phillip), Joe W. Morring and Teresa A. Morring of Norfolk, Debora R. Smith , Stephanie R. Smith and Tiffany R. Smith of Macon, Ga.; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Bertha Seay of Kenbridge, Va., Ruth Smith of Norfolk, Harriet Seay of Los Angeles and Hattie Smith of Newport News; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A funeral for Mrs. Smith is scheduled for noon Monday in Abyssinia Baptist Church, 2816 Colley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23508. Dr. Sheridan Nelson will preside. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk, following the service. Viewing will be Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. in Riddick Funeral Service, 1225 Norview Ave., and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church.
