Mrs. Gussie Smith died Sunday at 6 p.m. in a Norfolk hospital after a short 
illness.

She was a native of Ahoskie, NC, and had lived here 61 years.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Waldorf club and the First Baptist Church, Bute 
street.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Smith Sr., two daughters, Mrs. Lillian 
Green, Norfolk, and Mrs. Irene Lee, New York;  one son, Willie Smith Jr., 
Norfolk;  one sister, Miss Essie Barnes, Murfreesboro, NC;  four brothers, Floyd 
Barnes, Norfolk;  Otis Barnes, Jessie Barnes and Willie Barnes all of 
Murfreesboro ;  12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  Funeral services 
were conducted Wednesday at 1:30 at First Baptist Church.  Pretlow’s Funeral 
Home was in charge.  Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
