Norfolk - Charlie Otis Smith, 83, of 517 Reservoir avenue, died in a hospital.

A native of Mackey’s Ferry, NC, he was a son of Steven and Mrs. Ella Smith and 
the husband of Mrs. Julia Boykins Smith.

He was a deacon of Garden of Prayer Temple, Portsmouth, and a 47-year retired 
engineer of Tidewater Construction Co.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Lawrence R. Smith and Frank L. 
Smith of New York and Edward C. Smith of Norfolk;  two daughters, Mrs. Eloise O. 
McNear of Jamaica, NY, and Mrs. Icy Phillips of Cincinnati;  two brothers, 
Daniel Smith of Newport News and Dr. Aubrey Smith of East St. Louis ILL;  three 
sisters, Mrs. Louise Douning of Suffolk, Mrs. Beanie Midgett of New York and 
Mrs. Myrtle Garrett of Brooklyn, NY;  and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held in Garden of Prayer Temple by Bishop L. E. Willis.  
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.  Twilight Funeral Home was in charge.
