Smith, 96, of Kempsville, died yesterday at 4:15 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital. Unusually active for her years, she was taken ill last Thursday. Known to her friends as "Miss Georgia", she was to have celebrated her 97th birthday Monday. She was the widow of Walter Thomas Smith and one of the oldest residents of the county and the oldest member of the Kempsville Baptist Church. A native of Kemps Landing, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of George Williamson and Mrs. Emaline Marchant Williamson. She resided at the home of her daughter, her only survivor, Mrs. Lucille Crews, at Kempsville. Religious work was the main activity of Mrs. Smith's long life. She was a member of the Kempsville Baptist Church for 84 years, taught Sunday school for 40 years and was organist of the church for 20 years. A circle of the Woman's Missionary Society was named in her honor. She also was a member of the Three Score and Ten Club of Norfolk Mrs. Smith described as thrilling her first airplane ride at the age of 95 in July, 1954, when she flew to Washington, D.C. She also liked to recall her baptism in the river at Whitehurst Landing. On her 90th birthday celebraton in the church in 1948, the pastor gave her time during the morning service to thank her friends for their expressions of regard and gifts to her. Mrs. Smith was married at the age of 32. Her husband died 40 years later. Funeral services will be conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home tomorrow at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
