James Bernard Smith, 92, died at home Nov. 13, 2002. He was the son of Clarence B. 
Smith and Mary L. Parr of Norfolk.

He is survived by his sister, Lucy V. Rice of Norfolk and his friend and companion 
of many years, Lois Huffman; a nephew, Charles A. Rice III and wife, Ruth; 
grandnephews, Mark S. Rice and Dennis C. Rice and wife, Christine of Norfolk; 
grandnieces, Cheryl A. Jennings and husband, David of Powhatan, Va., Christine L. 
Garland and husband, Brent of Towson, Md.; great-grandniece, Carie Eckroade of 
Richmond; and grandnephew, Coleman Jennings of Powhatan.

"Jimmy," as he was known to family and friends, worked his entire life as an 
artist, illustrator and painter. He had painted vestments for the papalcy in Rome 
and for many years for different Catholic churches in the area. He was also noted 
for refinishing religious statues and icons. When the amusement parks were open in 
the area at Ocean View and Virginia Beach, Jimmy refinished the horses on the 
carousels and seasonally refinished several of the other attractions. He was a 
very talented artisan, giving freely of his time and talents.

The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Chapel on Norview 
Avenue in Norfolk today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted 
by Father Joseph Metzger of Blessed Sacrament Church at St. Mary's Cemetery, 
Norfolk, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
