Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Virginia) Tuesday, October 27, 1891  


The funeral of Mr. J. W. Smith, whose death was mentioned in The Virginian 
of Sunday, took place from his residence, No. 20 Mainer Street, Sunday at 
3:30 p.m., and was largely attended. A large number of Pickett-Buchanan 
Camp, of which the deceased was a member, where present to pay the last 
tribute of respect to their comrade. The services at the house were 
conducted by Dr. H. M. Wharton, at the grave by Dr. M. B. Wharton, of 
Freemason Street Baptist Church. The interment was in Pickett-Buchanan 
Camp’s lot, Elmwood Cemetery. The following were the pall-bearers:
Citizens-John Walters, M. O’Connor, W. E. Reid, F. E. Nottingham.
Pickett-Buchanan Camp-John P. Hall and T. J. Savage
