Norfolk Journal and Guide, Mar. 4, 1972
Norfolk - James E. Smith of 283 Virginia Beach Boulevard, died in a hospital.  A
native of Norfolk, he was a son of the late Robert and Mrs. Indiana (Briggs) Smith.

He was a retired custodian of Norfolk Police Department after 30 years and a
Baptist.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Audrey Boney of Norfolk;  two foster daughters,
Mrs. Elizabeth Guess of Norfolk and Mrs. Ruth Wills of New York;  nine
grandchildren;  and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graves Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
