Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, January 2, 2000 
Elsie Naomi Smith, 86, of the 700 block of Reservoir Ave., died Dec. 28, 1999,
in a local hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born in Norfolk to the late David and Blanche Whitehurst Fowler.
She was predeceased by her son, Alvin Smith Jr.

She retired from what was formerly Sovran Bank and was a member of St. John's
AME Church for 86 years. She was an active member of the Stewardess Board No. 3,
the Usher Board No. 2, Nannie C. Phelps Missionary Society Lay Organizations and
the Douglas Sturdevant Sunday School Class.

She is survived by two brothers, David and Anthony Whitehurst, both of Norfolk;
two grandchildren, Naomi and Anthony; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's AME Church by the
Rev. Larry Hinton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Family and friends may
assemble at the home of Norma Clyburn, 2387 Villa Circle, Apt. 4, Norfolk.
Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
