Mrs. Smith was a retired beautician. Mrs. Smith was born in Tarboro, N.C., on Dec. 12, 1914. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Norfolk and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Later, Mrs. Smith was a very active member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception and was involved in the development of social ministry programs in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Mrs. Smith will be missed by her husband of 52 years, Mr. Joseph Smith, of Norfolk; a godchild, Carolyn Mann, of Virginia Beach; and a host of other people whose lives were touched by her. She is predeceased by her parents, Chattie and Hugh Knight, and a brother, Robert V. Knight of Tarboro, N.C. A rosary service will be held Friday, March 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Norfolk. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at noon, with Monsignor Walter C. Barrett presiding. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
