The Norfolk Virginian Pilot January 9, 1940 


Mrs. Mary Ella Hampshire Smith, aged 71, wife of Charles Sumner Smith and 
daughter of John P. and Mrs. Aexana Davis Hampshire, a native and lifelong 
resident of Norfolk, died at 9:55 o’clock yesterday morning at her residence, 
1108 Lexan Avenue Larchmont. Mrs. Smith was the last surviving charter member 
of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by 
one daughter, Mrs. Joseph H. Baker, of Norfolk; two sons, John K. Smith, of 
Norfolk, and the Rev. Harold C. Smith, of Atlanta; two brothers, John P. 
Hampshire, of Norfolk and Elza Davis, of Norfolk; five grandchildren and 
several nieces and nephews.
The body will be taken from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial 
Avenue; to Park Avenue Presbyterian Church for services tomorrow afternoon at 2 
o’clock with the Rev. Frank H. Scattergood, the pastor, officiating. Interment 
will be in Elmwood.
