Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark May 8, 1916 

William H. Smith, 69 years old, died yesterday at 7:40 a.m., at the residence, 
636 Chapel Street, after a lingering illness. He is survived by his widow and 
two sons, W.H. of Norfolk and P.L. Smith of Princess Anne County; three 
daughters, Mrs. J.E. Cartwright and Mrs. R.E. Mayes, of Norfolk; Mrs. C.C. 
Frizzell of Princess Anne County; one adopted daughter, Mrs. W.C. Johnston of 
Portsmouth; one sister, Mrs. Walter Capps, of Knotts Island, N.C.; a half-
sister, Miss Nannie Bonney of Norfolk; a half brother, H.G. Bonney, also of 
Norfolk; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will take place at the residence 
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. S.W. Melton, of 
Freemason Street Baptist Church. Burial in Elmwood.
