The Virginian Pilot (Norfolk, Va.) Thursday October 4, 1900 page 2
Mr. George W. Smith departed this life at his home No. 31 Bute street extended, 
at 2:40 o'clock yesterday morning after a lingering illness., in the 54th year 
of his age. The deceased was formerly of the Norfolk police force, and at the 
time of his death was a member of Norfolk Lodge, No. 32, I.O.O.F. The funeral 
will be held from his residence at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon.

The obsequies of Mr. Geo. W. Smith were solemnized from the residence, No. 31 
Bute street extended, at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and was attended by 
Norfolk Lodge No. 32, I.O.O.F., of which the deceased was a member. The 
services were conducted by Rev. J.B. Merritt. The remains were laid to rest in 
Elmwood Cemetery.
