She was born in Southampton County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Wilmer and Lucy Whitney. She was educated in Norfolk County schools. She was a devoted member of Oakwood Chapel Church Disciples of Christ where she served faithfully on the deaconess board as former president and on the senior women's usher board as treasurer. She worked as a nurse's aide for 20 years, with Commonwealth Health Care. She was also a member of the Blooming Light Eastern Star-Chapter 111. She was well-loved and highly thought of by all who knew her. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother and shall be deeply missed. Lucy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Herbert L. Smith Sr. Along with her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Herbert L. Smith Jr. (Gloria J.) of Chesapeake, Edward J. Smith (Linda W.) and Andrew L. Smith Sr. (Jacqueline M.), both of Norfolk; and three daughters, Margie S. Norman (Ronald) of Dumfries, Va., Sandra L. Smith and Rachel Smith, both of Norfolk. She also leaves to mourn, two sisters, Georgia Jordan (Frank) of Virginia Beach and Nellie Lawson (Thomas) of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family wishes to give a special thank you to the staff of the Personal Touch Home Care and Hospice of Norfolk. Visitation will be held at 6336 Whittier Drive in Norfolk. A funeral will take place at noon Tuesday at Oakwood Chapel Church Disciples of Christ, 982 Avenue "E," Norfolk, with Pastor Earl J. Eaddy Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The services will be handled by Graves Funeral Home.
