Funeral services were tentatively set on Wednesday afternoon for 1:30 Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church where the deceased held his membership. The Venerable Richard B. Martin, rector of the church, will officiate. A native of Norfolk, Mr. Smithey was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip J. Smithey. He was a graduate of the Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk; Virginia State College, Petersburg, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he received his master’s degree in music. He also studied at Howard University. Mr. Smithey began his teaching career in September, 1946. He was instructor in music at Ruffner Junior High School, but taught at the Booker T. Wasington High School before going to Ruffner. He was a veteran of World War II. In addition to teaching music, Mr. Smithey served for awhile as director of the choir and organist at Second Calvary Baptist Church. He also helped with the musical programs on occasion at other churches. He made his home with his sister, Mrs. Emily McKennie, who resided at 7120 Mamie boulevard. In addition to Mrs. McKennie, Mr. Smithey is survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Annie L. Smithey, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Georgia Pringle, Norfolk; three brothers, Woodrow W. Smithey, Richmond, CA; Dr. Philip J. Smithey, Statesville, NC, and Robert A. Smithey, Norfolk; one aunt, Mrs. J. T. Hairston, Greensboro, NC; one uncle, Jacob Jordan, Brooklyn, NY; six nieces, one nephew and several cousins. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with Hale’s Funeral Home in charge.
