Smith Jr., of the 1800 block of Tidewater Drive, died June 30, 2000, at his home after a six month illness. He was born in Norfolk Jan. 17, 1925, to Catherine W. Smith and Horace W. Smith Sr., both deceased. He attended Norfolk Public Schools. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, he was drafted into the Army and was a part of the Normandy Invasion. After his time in the Army, he worked as an engineering technician at the Naval Air Station until retirement. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith of Pickens, S.C.; three sisters, Margaret S. Anderson and Shirley Sharp and her husband, Joseph Sharp, of Norfolk, Jean Siler and her husband, Clyde I. Siler, of Virginia Beach; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church, Bute Street, by Dr. Robert Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family at 874 Gilmer Road. Graves Funeral Home will handle arrangements.
