He was a son of the late James and Mrs. Virginia Smith, and a native of Norfolk. He had been employed by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad here for 11 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having seen combat service in Germany. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he served in the Men’s Choir. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmina Dinkins Smith; one son, August Smith Jr.; one daughter, Valina Smith; three brothers, Edward Smith and Allen Smith, both of Norfolk, and Leroy Smith of California. Funeral services will be conducted at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. H. T. Myers, pastor. Burial will be in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery with full military honors. The Hale Funeral Home will have charge.
