Mr. Smith was born in Norfolk. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years and was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street, the finance committee and former member of the Male Usher Board. He was a member of the Alumni of West Virginia State (H.R.) and the National Association of Letter Carriers and a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include three daughters, Elvera E. Chesson of Chesapeake, Janice S. Gregg and Deryl S. Creekmur, both of Austin, Texas; a son, Ernest M. Smith, Jr. of Portsmouth; a sister, Barbara S. Foster of Chesapeake; a brother, Edward H. Smith, Jr. of Norfolk; and five grandchildren. He was the son of the late Beatrice J. Smith and Edward H. Smith, Sr. A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church Bute Street by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Omega Psi Phi will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Hale Funeral Home.
