Born in Tarboro, N.C., Mr. Smith was a boiler maker with Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street, Norfolk, where he was a member of Boy Scouts Committee; Soup Kitchen; Men's Progressive League; Vacation Bible School and the Men's Chorus. He is survived by his wife, Daisy James Smith; three daughters, Janice Smith Roan and husband, Andrew, of Richmond, Eunice Vaughan of New Jersey and Roberta Porter of Chesapeake; a son, James Lawrence Smith and his wife, Cynthia, of Norfolk; a brother, William Freeman and wife, Joyce, of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church Bute Street, by the Rev. Dr. Robert Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be held from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 12:30 p.m. for the procession. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Soup Kitchen, Campaign 2000 or the Home for the Aged.
