Dr. Herbert S. Southgate, 94, of Wagon Trail, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1995, in the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center. A native of Norfolk, Dr. Southgate was the son of the late Thomas S. and Nettie Norsworthy Southgate. He received a degree from Virginia Military Institute in 1922, a Master of Theology degree from Emory University, and was bestowed a Doctor of Divinity degree by Randolph Macon College in Ashland. He served as a pastor in the Virginia Methodist Conference and was a superintendent of the Roanoke District. He was a member of The Jamestown Society, Kappa Alpha, various civic clubs, the Virginia Council of Churches, and was the author of ''The Glory and the Infamy.'' He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Isobel Fletcher Southgate; a son, Herbert F. Southgate of Lexington, Ky.; grandsons, Paul G. and Kenneth L. Southgate; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, with the Rev. Roy White and Judge Hal J. Bonney Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice Center, P.O. Box 16, Asheville, N.C. 28803. Brigman's Valley Funeral Service, Black Mountain, is in charge.
