Bernard E. Spellman, of the 600 block of New York Ave., died Jan. 12, 1997, at his residence. The Rev. Spellman, president of the Norfolk branch of the NAACP, was a native of Norfolk and a member and associate pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Spellman was a member of Tidewater Metro-Ministers; the executive board of I.L.A. and a board member of the Hunton YMCA. The Rev. Spellman taught math, drafting and wood shop at B.T. Washington High School in Suffolk from 1966 to 1968 and was I.C.T. coordinator from 1968-71. He was I.C.T. coordinator at Great Bridge High School from 1972 to 1981; assistant principal in 1981 and '82; principal at Great Bridge Intermediate School from 1982 to 1986; principal at Great Bridge Junior High School from 1986 to 1987; and supervisor of Trade and Industrial Education and Marketing Education in 1988 and 1989. He attended S.C. Armstrong Elementary School; Ruffner Junior High School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He graduated in 1966 from Norfolk State University with a B.S. in Industrial Education and in 1972 from Virginia State University with a M.Ed. in Industrial Education. He earned his Certification for Administration from Old Dominion University in 1984. He completed further studies at James Madison and Radford universities. Among his many activities and honors were: Scoutmaster at Second Calvary Baptist Church in 1974; member of NAACP; chairman, Men's Day at Second Calvary Baptist Church; member of the Pulpit Committee in 1981; served as assistant chairman of the Deacon board in 1982; member of senior choir's Male Chorus at Second Calvary Baptist Church from 1982 to 1985 and Sunday school teacher at Second Calvary Baptist Church from 1982 to 1989. Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. Spellman of Norfolk; two daughters, Avis P. Spellman of Norfolk and Melissa E. Gun of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Nellie Turner, Ruth Spellman and Annie Washington, all of Norfolk; two brothers, Joseph Harrington of Virginia Beach and James Spellman of Chesapeake; two grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Thursday at Second Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The remains will be ready for viewing from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The remains will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. on Thursday and the family will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the processional. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Second Calvary Baptist Church Renovation Fund or to the Norfolk Branch of the NAACP.
