He was a son of John P. and Mrs. Susie Hudgins Spence. He father formerly was superintendent of Norfolk Schools. He was a past senior warden and treasurer of Episcopal Church of the Ascension and treasurer of its Wales Hank Bible Class. He also was a member of Owens Lodge 164, AF&AM, and the KCCH Scottish Rite, and was “Dad” of the DeMolay’s Norfolk Chapter. He was employed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Besides his widow, surviving are one daughter, Miss Sally Land Spence; and one son, Charles H. Spence Jr., both of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Lota Spence Reid of Emporia; and one brother; John Paul Spence Jr. of Baltimore. The body will be taken from Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home to Episcopal Church of the Ascension for a service Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and contributions sent instead to the building fund of Ascension Church.
