Spence Caught Between Bulkhead and Propeller Shaft On Cruiser and Dies of Injuries in Hospital William H. Spence of Seaboard avenue, South Norfolk, died at 9:15 o'clock last night at the Norfolk Protestant Hospital from the result of injuries received while at work on board the cruiser Olympia at the Norfolk Navy Yard yesterday. Spence was working on a valve in the shaft alley on the cruiser Olympia in the dry dock and in some manner was caught between the bulkhead and a portion of one of the propeller shafts, which was being replaced, and badly crushed. After some difficulty the shaft was removed and he was taken to the yard dispensary, where Dr. R.E. Ledbetter rendered first aid, relieving him, as far as possible, of his suffering. Dr. J.A. Norfleet rendered what aid possible after the injured man reached his home but his condition was found to be so critical that he was ordered removed to the hospital, where an operation was performed. Mr. Spence was 38 years old and is survived by a widow. He had been a resident of this section for many years and was well known and highly esteemed. He was a member of several fraternal orders. Mrs. Spence is a sister of Councilman G.B. Randolph of Berkley ward. ********************************************************** The funeral of the late W.H. Spence, who died Wednesday evening at the Norfolk Protestant Hospital from injuries received while at work in the Norfolk Navy Yard will take place from the family residence, on Chesapeake avenue, South Norfolk, this afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. J.O. Cox, pastor of the South Norfolk Christian Church. Members of Tidewater Council 30, Jr., O.U.A.M. will attend in a body. The remains will be laid to rest in Magnolia Cemetery.
