Spencer, said to have been the oldest practicing pharmacist in the State, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock at his residence, 1025 Wellington Avenue, South Norfolk, at the age of 79 years. Doctor Spencer, as he was best known, came here about 30 years ago from Murfreesboro, N.C., in which community he received his early education. He had compounded drugs in his home State 25 years before coming here. He held positions in the drug stores of Taggott’s Pharmacy, Lane’s Pharmacy, and for a term of years conducted a drug store of his own on Liberty Street, and had been with Worrell’s Pharmacy, South Norfolk, since 1929. He numbered his friends by the hundreds whom he had served in his profession and to many he had been both doctor and druggist. So far as could be ascertained he had outlived his nearest relatives except some distant kinsmen in Raleigh, N.C., who are expected to arrive here today to attend the funeral services. Mr. Spence was without children and his wife, who was Mrs. Emma Duke Spencer, also of North Carolina. She died last May 25. The body was removed to the Graham Funeral Home, Jackson and Jefferson Streets, South Norfolk, where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o’clock. Burial will be by the side of his wife in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk.
