While we have no external written list of reasons for his sending her to be with us, there may be some clues in her accomplishments while she was here. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and enlisted in the Women's Army Corps that summer. After discharging from the service, she attended Norfolk State and Hampton University and obtained her final degree at Howard University in home economics. This suggests that she was given by her creator the talents and perseverance to be a good student. After graduating from Howard University, she started her teaching career as part of the Head Start Program and later became a full-time teacher with the Washington, D.C., public school system. She later followed her husband as he moved from the faculty at Howard University to join the faculty at Norfolk State. She accepted a position in the Norfolk school system where her talents as a teacher blossomed. By communicating high expectations, much love and creating innovative methods she was able to turn many students previously marked as failures into successes. Because of this she was voted "Teacher of the Year" several times by her colleagues. This suggests she had been given by her creator the necessary talents to be a good teacher. She was elected as president by members of The Howard University Faculty Wives Club, The Norfolk State University Faculty Wives Club and The Woman's Club of Norfolk. This suggests that she had been given by her creator the set of complex talents required to be a good leader. Father Harris' recruiting efforts resulted in her becoming a member of Grace Episcopal Church. She later became a member of the Altar Guild, member of St. Monica's Guild, member of the Wednesday Morning Bible Study group, helper at St. Mary's Bookstore and a member of the Senior Choir. This suggests that she was given by her creator the talents and will needed to be a good servant. Just as she was willing to be the bridge used by the creator as the conduit by which her offspring crossed from the unknown into the known, so was she willing to be the ladder by which they climbed to their individual success. Thus she leaves behind a loving and faithful husband, Dr. Thurman E. Spriggs; three children, Miss Patricia Julienne Spriggs , retired assistant principal in the Suffolk school system, Dr. William Edward Spriggs, head of the economics department at Howard University. Mrs. Karen Baldwin (Spriggs), software applications engineer at Texas Instruments; a loving daughter-in-law, Jennifer Spriggs (Dover); loving son-in-law, Michael Baldwin; and three grandchildren, William Spriggs, Rosezetta Baldwin and Joseph Baldwin; four brothers and sisters, Joseph Henderson, Helen McMurray, Clara Andrews and Ivana Terry. This suggests that she was given by her creator the talent of being a nurturing, loving and wise wife, mother and grandmother sowing the seeds for the next generation of leaders, servants and teachers. Thus the creator appears to send each of us across the bridge with the tools needed to accomplish His intended mission which defines our lives. A wake will be held in the Chapel of Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A funeral will be held Thursday at noon in Grace Episcopal Church, 1400 E. Brambleton Ave. Father Cobb will officiate. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery. www.gravesfuneralhomeinc.com.
