Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Wednesday, October 8, 2003 
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and
friend, Mary E. ``Mamp'' Staten, departed from us Oct. 5, 2003. She was born
March 3, 1933 in New Bern, N.C., to the late James and Daisy J. Benson.

She is survived by eight children, Beverly J. Christian (Larry) of Williamsburg,
Linda M. West (Edward) of Norfolk, Deborah M. Pulley of Hampton, Kenneth Staten
(Angie) of Portsmouth, Donald R. Staten and Ronald L. Staten (Tina), all of
Norfolk, Mary E. Bertrand (Chris) of Jacksonville, N.C., and Kathi L. Staten of
Norfolk; three sisters, Daisy Jean Walker of Chesapeake, Carolyn Seberry of
Kingman, Ariz., and Doris Kallon of Clinton, Md.; three brothers, Samuel Benson,
Robert Benson and Johnnie Benson, all of Norfolk; three brothers, Samuel Benson,
Robert Benson and Johnnie Benson, all of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She
was predeceased by her son, Clarence R. Staten.

A funeral will be held at noon Friday at First Baptist Church of Lamberts Point
in Norfolk. Presiding clergy will be the Rev. Anthony C. Paige. The burial
service will take place at Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will begin Thursday from 1
to 8 p.m. at Hale Funeral Home.
