This feeling, the writer is now sensible of, he is called upon by the death of Captain Robert E. Steed, (who breathed his last yesterday, morning) to say a few words which he deems due to his memory, and appropriate to the sad occasion. The deceased was a plain man, upright and benevolent-a protector and guardian of the widow and orphan; the poor knew him well, in him the Church has lost an efficient member, the Clergy one to whom they could always look as a tried friend, his house, like his heart, was the seat of hospitality, the tabernacle of charity and good feeling. The death of an affectionate mother, first awakened him to that consideration which led him to come out from the world, and with the then amiable partner of his bosom, he sought in the sanctuary of the Lord the instruction which he needed, and which led him to embrace the truth as it is in Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life, and upon whose kind arm and merciful promises he was enabled to rely for pardon, peace and eternal life. The tenor of his life proved the sincerity of his profession; he was ever ready to promote the cause of his Redeemer. Ardent in his attachment to the Church of his choice, never was he known to shrink from any duty connected with her interest or welfare. Our civil and religious community has lost in the deceased a worthy member; a numerous family, ah! This is the tender string, so various the relations, so important the offices sustained, his and, father master, the main stay is swept away, and the moment is a complete wreck seeps to be left to buffet the storm of adversity. But no! There is a bow in the cloud. Three score and seven years allotted to his pilgrimage on earth, during which, as is the lot of fallen men, he had encountered trial, trouble, and affliction. The last few years of his life his vigorous frame was shocked by apoplexy, by a severe stroke of which he was finally brought to his end, after lingering three days in nearly a speechless state. The funeral will take place from the late residence, this afternoon at 5 o’clock, at which his friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.
