STEELE, WCTU WORKER, DEATH'S VICTIM Church and Temperance Worker Dies After Several Days' Illness Mrs. Evie J. Steele, for many years a prominent Christian worker in Norfolk, died yesterday afternoon at 1:20 o'clock at Leigh Memorial Hospital after several days illness. She had been in declining health for the last six or seven years. Mrs. Steele had served as president of the Young Women's Christian Home for about 15 years and before that as secretary for a similar period. She succeeded Mrs. R.H. Jones, organizer of the home, as its head upon the latter's death. She also was an active member of the State and County Women's Christian Temperance Unions, being a life member of the former. She was president of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bi-County WCTU at one time and headed the Norfolk union at the time of her death. She was a lifetime member of Freemason Street Baptist Church and active in its work. The daughter of the late Richard and Martha E. Johnakin, she is survived by her husband, J.T. Steele, manager of the Berkley bureau of the Virginian Pilot; a sister, Mrs. Cora L. Randolph; a brother, Richard M. Johnakin, and several nieces and nephews. She made her home at 326 Pembroke Avenue. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Freemason Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in the family lot in Elmwood Cemetery. The body will remain at the residence until the time of the funeral.
