The latter was William Stephens, who was employed in White’s foundry as a grinder. Stephens retired to his room on the second floor over Phillips’ furniture store, 333 Church street, Saturday night and was discovered by a lady living on the same floor at 6:30 Sunday lying dead in the alley between the Phillips building and the old Ohef Sholom Temple in a pool of blood. The Coroner was informed of the case and an inquest held at J. L. Morris & Co.’s undertaking establishment. The Coroner’s jury was composed of William Caines, J. L. Morris, W. E Wallace, John H. Finley, F. W. Capehart, H. D. Wallace and Coroner Odend'hal. The evidence showed that Stephens had been drinking heavily Saturday night and had probably fallen from the window while wandering around the room in a drunken stupor. Death was occasioned by cerebral concussion and hemorrhage, but whether the deceased died instantly or not could not be determined. The dead man was a native of Germany, but had lived in Norfolk for about fifteen years. His body was turned over to his wife, from whom Stephens has been estranged for some years, and the funeral conducted from her house on upper Church street yesterday afternoon. Stephens was a Catholic and was buried with the rites of his church in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
