Norfolk Virginian Pilot Wednesday August 12, 1942
James William Stephens, aged 64, husband of Mrs. Lillian Jenkins Stephens, died 
at his residence, 4819 Hampton boulevard, yesterday morning at 4 o'clock.  He 
was a native of Denison, Iowa, and had been a resident of Norfolk for 42 years. 
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, J.W. Stephens, of Portsmouth and 
Marshall and Felix Stephens, of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. Polly Merrit, of 
Paloma, Mo.; Mrs. Emma Moughon, of Mathews, and Mrs. W.T. Heath, Mrs. Jesse 
Dodge and Mrs. Nellie Hicks, all of Norfolk, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock in the funeral 
chapel of James V. Derry, 1920 Colley avenue.  The Rev. W.M. Taylor, pastor of 
the Zion Methodist Church, of which he was a member of the board of stewards, 
will officiate.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
