Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Saturday, November 6, 1999 
Alfred Steward, 80, of the 400 block of Malibu Drive, died Nov. 3, 1999, at
Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Born in Murfreesboro, N.C., he was retired from the International Longshoreman's
Association, Local 1248. He was a member of Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church
in Norfolk, where he was a member of the Board of Stewards and the Chancel
Choir; he was also the church van driver. Mr. Steward was awarded the honor of
``Father and Grandfather of the Century'' on Aug. 7, 1982, by the Morgan-Steward
Family.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Morgan Steward; a daughter, Marian Steward
Speller Briley; a son, Alfred Richard Steward Sr.; grandchildren, Curtis
Steward, Benita Norris, Alfred R. Steward Jr., Aaron Debois, Alfred Speller,
Anita Speller Anderson, Marion ``Tina'' Steward of Goldsboro, N.C., and Michael
Ware of Billings, Mont.; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Jesse Morgan of Washington,
D.C.; a grandson-in-law, ``Rick'' Norris of Virginia Beach; and
granddaughters-in-law, Melanie Blow Speller and Cassandra Steward. He was
predeceased by his parents, Bertha Gatling Steward and Kelly Steward; sisters,
Georgia Manley, Rebecca Vincent, Della Copeland and Marie Truitt, and brothers,
Willie Steward and Freeman Steward.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church by
the Rev. G. Bernard Crawford. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Hale Funeral
Home is handling arrangements.
