Virginian-Pilot December 12, 1891
Mr. J. E. Stokes, bailiff of the United States Court, died at his residence on 
Holt street, yesterday morning. He leaves a widow and one adopted son (Mr. Charles 
E. Richardson). Mr. Stokes was well-known in this city and recently, several years 
ago, he was Mayor of Portsmouth.
Mr. Stokes was a native of New York, a soldier in the Federal army during the 
civil war and, at the close of hostilities, came South and located in Portsmouth. 
His funeral will take place from S. Mary’s Catholic Church Sunday afternoon at 3 
o’clock.
