Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark July 10, 1928

Mrs. Mary Stokes, aged 75, widow of James H. Stokes, well known hotel proprietor 
and former mayor of Portsmouth, died yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at a local 
hospital. Mrs. Stokes was a native of England and had been a resident of Norfolk 
for the past 35 years.
The body will be taken from H.D. Oliver's Funeral Apartments, 610-12 East 
Freemason Street, to St. Mary's Catholic Church for funeral services tomorrow 
morning at 10 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

STOKES, MARY — At a local hospital, Monday, July 9, 1928, at 3 o’clock a.m., 
MARY, widow of James H. Stokes, aged 75 years.
Remains will be taken from H. D. Oliver’s Funeral Apartments, Nos. 610-12 East 
Freemason street, to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for funeral services WEDNESDAY 
MORNING at 10 o’clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment, 
St. Mary’s Cemetery.
