Born in 1917 in Halifax County, Va., Nancy was the daughter of Walter Daniel Spencer and Lottie Bertha Wilson. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Whitehead Patrick and husband Bower of Norfolk and a son, David Dudley Whitehead III and wife Kathryn of Cummings, Ga. She is also survived by six granddaughters, Dudley Patrick Sutro and husband John of Richmond, Marbury Patrick Abella and husband Jay of Williamsburg, Cheney Patrick Edmunds and husband Berkeley of Annapolis, Md., Kimberly Whitehead Fike and husband Glen of Dayton, Ohio, Jenifer Duncan and husband Tom of Lawrenceville, Ga., Victoria Johnson and husband David of Atlanta; a stepgrandson, James Kent Creasy and wife Angela of Roswell, Ga.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, David Dudley Whitehead Jr. and later husbands, Alvin A. Cherry and Joseph Stone. Through her later marriages, she acquired a large extended family whom she remained close to and enjoyed throughout her life. A longtime resident of Norfolk, Nancy, with some reservation, moved to Westminster-Canterbury, where she immediately became involved -- thoroughly enjoying old friends, many new friends and her brand new life. Nancy will be remembered by her son and daughter as a strong, determined, caring and completely devoted mother and by her grandchildren as their loving "grandma" who was so proud of them and cherished their visits. She will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at Westminster-Canterbury in the Holy Trinity Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Christopher Wilson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, VA 23518. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. is handling arrangements.
