Rites Held For Civic League Organizer

NORFOLK - Walter Sumler, founder and first president of the Beacon Light Civic 
League, received funeral rites Tuesday in First Baptist Church, Berkley, where 
he held membership. The Rev. William Tyree officiated.

Mr. Sumler of 214 Poplar avenue was the husband of Mrs. Lucille Sumler and a son 
of the late John O. and Mrs. Clara Jackson Sumler.

The Norfolk native was a retired manager of Sumler's Cleaners and a member of 
the Beacon Light Civic League.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two brothers, William Henry Sumler of St. 
Albans N.Y. and Arthur Sumler of Norfolk; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Hill of the 
Bronx, N.Y.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Chatman Funeral Home in charge.
