Sutton, 727 Johnson avenue, died Saturday morning, May 21, after a protracted illness. The deceased, an outstanding figure in hotel waiting, was at one time headwaiter at the local Monticello Hotel. Just prior to his decline in health, he was identified with the Pennsylvania Railroad. A native of this city, Mr. Sutton was a member of Bank Street Baptist Church and served as trustee until his illness. He attended the local public schools and the Norfolk Mission College. His social connections included the Acme Club, the Eureka Lodge and he was one of the founders of the Oriole Social and Beneficial Club. Immediate survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian B, two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude B. Jackson and Miss Belle J. Sutton, all of Norfolk. Funeral ceremonies were held Wednesday afternoon May 25 from the Bank Street Baptist Church with the Rev. J. B. Henderson in charge. Also participating were the Revs. R. B. Martin and W. O. Carson. Miss Myrtle Griffin, rendered the only solo, “The Lord’s Prayer.” King’s Funeral Home was in charge of interment in West Point Cemetery. Pallbearers serving were Wiley W. Selden, Ernest H. Moseley, Thomas Frazier, Louis Hughes, D. Gatewood Thomas, Clarence N. Russell, John Mathews, and Felix Venable. Out-of-town relatives attending the services were Mrs. Daisy Hamilton, Spartanburg, SC, Mrs. Beatrice Campbell, New York, John Butler,Sr., Baltimore MD; John Butler Jr., Washington, DC, and Cpl. John D. Floyd, Fort Benning GA.
