Virginian Pilot Sunday December 27, 1908

The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Virginia Swain, relict of the late Thos. E. 
Swain of Sussex county, Va., who died at the residence of her son-in-law, E.A. 
Graves, 119 Berkley avenue, Christmas morning at 7:30 o'clock, in the 71st year 
of her age, will be conducted from the above residence this afternoon at 3 
o'clock.
She was a daughter of the late Col. Maximillian and Lydia Nash Herbert and is 
survived by two daughters, Mrs. E.A. Graves of this city and Mrs. H.C. Zimmerman 
of Baltimore, Md. and one sister, Miss Sudie Herbert of Norfolk proper, all of 
whom were at her bedside when the end came.
The deceased had been in failing health for some time, but not confined to her 
bed.
She had been residing in Berkley a great number of years and was well known and 
highly esteemed.
The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary V. Swain, who died at the home of her 
daughter, Mrs. Ernest Graves, in Berkley avenue, Christmas morning, was 
conducted from the residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. E.W. Cowling, 
rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Rev. Robert Gatewood, rector of St. 
Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating.
The remains were laid to rest in Magnolia cemetery, the following gentlemen 
acting as pallbearers:  Messrs. C.E. Herbert, James Herbert, Solomon Barclay, 
William Deal, P.M. Pritchard, A.J. Massey, N.P. Tatem and William Herbert.
