Captain Swartwout was very well known in Norfolk. For more than 35 years he had been captain of the Watch at the Norfolk Navy Yard and was the oldest surviving member of the watch that existed when he first became a guardian of the life and property in the yard in 1871. He was 79 years old. Just a few days before his death Captain Swartwout was taken ill. The doctor diagnosed his case as being a form of heart trouble and held but little hope for his recovery. He went to Baltimore on July 18 to stay about two weeks. He had been preceded by his wife, who had intended to return with him to Norfolk at the end of his vacation. They were visiting their only child, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Neugebauer. Captain Swartwout was born in Duchess County, New York. Before making his home in Norfolk, more than 45 years ago, he had been enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1871 he left the navy and was appointed a watchman in the yard. He served in that capacity for only a few years before being appointed captain of the watch. He had married Miss Christina Myer of Kingston, N.Y. He is survived by her and by their daughter, leaving no other children or relatives. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and of Norfolk Lodge No. 1, A.F. and A.M. The body will be brought to Norfolk this morning. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
