Sweeney of the 4200 block of Caliente St. died Jan. 20, 2004, in his home. Mr. Sweeney was born in Quonset Point, R.I., and was a resident of Norfolk most of his life. He was a maintenance engineer with the Norfolk City School System for more than 26 years. He was a graduate of St. Pius X and Norfolk Catholic high schools. Thomas was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge No. 38 BPOE. He was a member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 367 and a past faithful navigator of the Knights of Columbus Assembly No. 1162. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Michelle Karen and Catherine Marie Sweeney and nephew, Thomas Richard Sweeney. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Barbara Bilinski Sweeney of Norfolk; his sister, Teresa Ann Sweeney of Virginia Beach; four brothers, Hubert L. Sweeney and his wife Charlotte of Pensacola, Fla., Donald W. Sweeney of Tampa, Fla., James M. Sweeney and his wife Jean of Chicago, Ill. and Sean R. Sweeney of Virginia Beach; his sister-in-law, Cynthia Perkins of Hungry Horse, Mont.; and six nieces and nephews, Karen and Katie Sweeney, Amanda and Chelsea Cavey and Christine and Joshua Sweeney. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Francis Muench officiating. A Knights of Columbus Chalice service will be in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Monday at 6:30 p.m. followed by an Elks ceremony. Burial will be in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial at the Knights of Columbus Council No. 367.
