Sweeney, 76, died Jan. 25, 2009, in Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. A native of Randolph, Mass., he was the son of the late Thomas and Lillian Barker Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney was a draftsman and intelligence officer 1st class in the U.S. Navy until his retirement in 1970. Following his military retirement, he went on to work for the Norfolk Public School system as a master plumber until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Sweeney was a former member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and attended services at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 367 and Assembly No. 1162 4th Degree. He also volunteered his time at DePaul Hospital with Sister Agatha for many years. Mr. Sweeney was preceded in death by his children, T.J, James, Catherine and Michelle, and his grandson, Thomas R. Sweeney. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara A. Sweeney of Norfolk; his sons, Hubert Sweeney and his wife Charlotte of Pensacola, Fla., Donald Sweeney of Tampa and Sean R. Sweeney of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Teresa Sweeney of Virginia Beach and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Perkins of Hungry Horse, Mont.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his sister, Elizabeth Minassian of Winchester, Mass.; and his brother, Edward L. Sweeney of Andover, Mass. The funeral will be held at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. during which there will be a Chalice ceremony and 4th Degree Honor Guard. Following services, the family will have a reception at the Knights of Columbus on Kennebeck Avenue in Norfolk. Anyone planning to attend services on base who does not have a military pass will need to call the funeral home with names and license plate information at least 24 hours prior to the service time (757) 622-7353.
