Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark May 21, 1929

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sykes, aged 78, widow of W.R. Sykes, died at 11:35 o'clock 
Sunday night at the residence of her son-in-law, J.W. Siebert, 634 West Thirty-
seventh Street. She was a daughter of the late Edmund R. and Mary Ellen Gornto, 
was a native of Norfolk County, and had been a resident of the city for 50 
years. Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. Siebert; two sons, W.E. Sykes, of 
Norfolk and Emmett Sykes, of Judsonia, Ark. and one brother, Charles Gornto, of 
Hampton. Funeral services will be held at the Siebert residence this afternoon 
at 3 o'clock, the Rev. L.E. Smith, D.D., pastor of the Christian Temple, 
officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
