SYKES, aged 42 years. Funeral from the residence, Jackson and Poindexter Streets, South Norfolk, THIS (Tuesday) AFTERNOON at 4:30 o'clock. Friends of the family invited to attend. Interment in Magnolia Cemetery. ************************************************************ MURDERED OFFICER WAS BURIED WITH HONORS Many Attended Funeral Services Over Body of Joseph W. Sykes The funeral of Deputy Sheriff Joseph W. Sykes, who was shot Saturday night by a highwayman in South Norfolk and died Sunday evening at the St. Vincent Hospital, was conducted from the family residence in Jackson Street, near Poindexter Street, South Norfolk, yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The attendance was large, as the officer was very popular and regarded as a man of high honor and integrity. Rev. R.B. Scott, pastor of the Liberty Street M.E. Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. J.O. Cox, pastor of South Norfolk Christian Church. Mrs. Sykes has been prostrated by grief ever since the occurrence, and yesterday it became necessary to call in a physician. She was too ill to go to the grave with the remains of her husband. She is left with three small children and one twelve years old by his first wife. The deceased having been a member of Oakdale Lodge No. 70, I.O.O.F.; Tidewater Council No. 30, Jr. O.U.A.M. and Berkley Aerie No. 79, F.O. Eagles, these orders attended in a body, as well as many others who were friends of Mr. Sykes and his family. The remains were laid to rest in Magnolia Cemetery and the active pallbearers were selected from the above named organizations. Those who acted as honorary pallbearers were: William Carmine, deputy sheriff, Special Officer Joseph W. Hutchings, L.M. Nicholas, Cooper Bell, J.R. Walk, George G. Martin, J.W. McHorney and W.C. Coburn.
