Norfolk Virginian Pilot December 22, 1938

Mrs. Bettie Morris Sykes, 88 years old, died last night at 7 o'clock in Atlanta, 
according to advices received here. She was visiting her nephew, Brig. Gen. 
William R. Dashiell and died at his home. The body is to be brought to Norfolk 
for funeral and burial services.
Mrs. Sykes was the widow of George Finlay Sykes and was a native of Nansemond 
County. She resided in Norfolk for many years and has a number of friends and 
relatives in this section. She is survived by three sons, Leigh Gordan Sykes, of 
Norfolk; Dr. Walter Morris Sykes, of Dallas and Steven Borum Sykes, of Eureka, 
Kans.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements 
will be announced later.

Mrs. Bettie Morris Sykes - Funeral services for Mrs. Sykes, who died Wednesday 
night at the home of her nephew, Brig. Gen. William R. Dashiell, in Atlanta, 
will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, 101 Colonial Avenue. The Rev. O.B. Newton, pastor of Colonial Avenue 
Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The body, 
accompanied by General Dashiell, will arrive this morning on the Seaboard Air 
Line train.
Mrs. Sykes was the widow of George Finlay Sykes and was a native of Nansemond 
County. She lived in Norfolk for many years and had many friends in the city and 
section. Surviving are three sons, Leigh Gordan Sykes, of Norfolk, Dr. Walter 
Morris Sykes, of Dallas, Texas and Steven Borum Sykes, of Eureka, Kans.; two 
grandchildren, Edward Dashiell Sykes and Jane Elizabeth Sykes, of Dallas and 
several nieces and nephews.
