Virginian-Pilot, June 02, 1899

The funeral of Miss Josephine Sykes took place from the residence of her mother 
and brother, Mrs. U. and Earnest L. Sykes, No. 63 High Street, at 5 o’clock 
Wednesday, May 31. She was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery among a profusion 
of flowers and many tears from friends, acquaintances and relatives. 

Tenderly and lovingly we laid her to rest 
And planted sweet moss flowers over her breast;
Laid her to rest were the elm trees mourn,
Softly and radiantly her spirit has flown
Leave her in peace with her Father, her God
He knew the path His dear child had trod
Lay her head down in a rose hued nest
Plant the sweet moss flowers over her breast
All loved her well, but Christ loved her best
Tenderly and lovingly we’ve laid her to rest
