Sykes, of 1307 Jefferson Street, South Norfolk, a retired postal employee and veteran of the Spanish-American War, died yesterday at 1:30 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital. He had been in failing health for a year. Sykes, affectionately known as "Brother Charley", was a son of the late John Henry and Mrs. Lydia Halstead Sykes. He was a native of Fentress and had lived in South Norfolk most of his life. He belonged to the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church and had served on the board of stewards for 25 years. He was also a member of South Norfolk Lodge No. 339, A.F. and A.M., and Willie Lee Lodge No. 119, Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Hall Sykes; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Speight and Mrs. Maude Stewart, of South Norfolk, and Mrs. T.C. Hollowell, of Rockingham, N.C.; two brothers, W.A. Sykes, of Scottsville, and M.B. Sykes of Ocean View, and one aunt, Mrs. Sarah Sawyer, of Norfolk. The body was removed to the Francis A. Guy Funeral Home, South Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church. The body will be at the church one hour before services. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
