Tate, beloved and devoted wife of Mr. Leroy Tate, died at her late residence, 860 Johnson Ave., Thursday, March 13, after an illness extending over several months. The funeral occurred Sunday from Bank Street Baptist Church, of which the deceased was a life-long member, and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. M. Long. Mrs. Tate, who was one of the leading contraltos in Tidewater, had been an active member of the choir of Bank Street Church since she was fourteen years of age. She was at one time a member of the Olympic quartette, the first mixed professional quartette organized in Norfolk, which was composed of Jerry C. Anderson, bass; Joshua Lockett, tenor; Miss Martha Adams, soprano and Mrs. Bessie Tate, contralto. Joseph Wilson was pianist and manager. The deceased was associated with her husband in business as cashier and general manager and was of invaluable aid to him and a great factor in his success, which was very marked under her management. She is survived by her husband, mother, three brothers and four sisters. A brother, Mr. Jerry C. Anderson, who is with the Southland Singers on Northern tour, came from Hudson, MI, to attend the funeral of his sister. Mr. Anderson rejoined the company at Battle Creek, MI, Friday. Another brother, Mr. John W. Anderson, came from Philadelphia to attend the obsequies. He will return next week.
