Norfolk Virginian July 16, 1879

Mr. Joseph P. Tatem, one of Berkley's best known citizens and a most worthy 
gentleman, died at his residence in Berkley, last Monday night, at 11:50 
o'clock, in the 68th year of his age, after several weeks severe illness.  
Mr. Tatem has occupied the position as collector for the Portsmouth and 
Norfolk County Ferry Company for a good many years and in respect to his 
memory the flags of the Elizabeth were hung at half-mast yesterday.

Mr. Joseph Tatem, an aged and respected resident of Berkley died at his home 
in that village Monday night, at 12 o'clock.  He leaves a wife and five 
children to mourn his loss.  He was in the 68th year of his age.
