Mr. Tatem had boarded the little foot ferry which transports the workmen across the river, when nearly across he was stricken and expired in the boat as it neared the Portsmouth side. The body, after being placed on the wharf and viewed by the Portsmouth city coroner, was turned over to Funeral Director, J.R. Williams of Berkley. Mr. Tatem, who was a native of Berkley and was one of the most prominent and esteemed residents, was a good citizen and always took a prominent part in politics and was at all times always considerate of the welfare of the community in which he lived. Mr. Tatem was a machinist by trade and for many years held a position with the Norfolk Marine Railway and was also in business on his own account at one time. For the past several years he was employed at the Navy Yard. He was prominent and active in Masonic circles. He was the son of the late Benjamin Thomas and Mrs. Mary Louisa Tatem of Norfolk county and is survived by one brother, Sgt. James F. Tatem, and two sisters, Miss M. Sue Tatem and Miss Margaret Tatem. The funeral services will be conducted at the family residence, 27 Pendleton street, Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. R. R. Phelps, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church and burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery.
